August 11, 2005 Walking up to the Lodge
Making my steps smaller to match his
A tiny hand slips into mine.
She’s pulling my hair into knotty braids
And it hurts
But I smile and let her, because she is happy.
Putting the finishing touches on the blue face paint snake
I sit back and rinse my brush
And find myself in a bear-hug embrace.
It’s hot
And the sweat’s running into my eyes
But I let her rest her head against my sticky cheek anyway.
I’ve just walked the nature hike twice
Forty-five minutes each time
But of course you can have a piggyback.
On the hug-line
Her dog tags dig into my chest
But I want to hold her like that forever.
My own vision blurred
Looking into their eyes at Chapel 5
I see tears.
Letting them whup me at foosball
Cleaning their sticky fingers
Picking up their trash
Kissing their bruises
Letting them splash me at the pool
Making me laugh for making them laugh
These are the rewards.
Sixty hands go up in the air
“Yes, I want to accept Jesus.”
These are the rewards
New souls
Won for the Kingdom,
These are the rewards.
